Video Games, Environmental Awareness and Climate Change

Environment, sustainability and climate change related themes in and around games increasingly abound. Among them, some new Asia produced games take distinct approaches to facilitate and support environment appreciation and awareness. By discussing two exemplary games and their gamevironments – specifically, interviews with and statements from game developers, debates and reviews from players and comments on gameplay videos – this talk explores how nature environment related themes are taken up in these games and how this is entertained and received, by players and beyond.

Xenia Zeiler is Professor of South Asian Studies at the University of Helsinki. Her research and teaching are situated at the intersection of digital media, culture, and society, specifically as related to India and global Indian communities. Her focus within this wider field of digital culture is video games and gaming research, in India and beyond. Closely related to and supporting this are her other major research areas: digital religion, popular culture, cultural heritage and mediatization.

Play artistic/interesting games and share your experiences

Come join the scheming and negotiations as players gather to participate in various social deduction games, such as Werewolf/Mafia, Resistance and Secret Hitler. These fun and intense games are easy to learn and you probably have already played some of them.

Players are randomly assigned roles of different alignments and special powers. The aim is to discover who are with you and who are against you - and how you could convince the others of the truths or lies you want them to follow. Meanwhile there's voting, eliminating, special actions and quests to figure out!

- The session begins with the introduction of the hosts, players and games available, so participation from the beginning is recommended, but it's also possible to join later and leave after any match.

- Depending on the game and number of players a match can last between 10-75 minutes.

- Several games can be run simultaneously. There's going to be at least one game in English all the time, but it's possible to split into an English and a Finnish game.

The Global Perspectives Conference is a student-led academic conference that embraces global agendas in a multidisciplinary fashion. As a presenter, it is a great opportunity to get experience sharing and discussing your research in a safe environment. We encourage students to present their thesis topics at the conference with the aim of sharing knowledge and breaking boundaries between disciplines. The conference acts as a space of inspiration between students who have or will in the future write a research focused thesis.

Media studies students are introducing their bachelor's theses. Come and hear the latest research on the field of media and game studies! Presentations will be (mostly) in Finnish.

The students of the Game Project 2024 course have created several awesome games during the spring. Join us to hear presentations by the creators and try the games out! Both digital and board games are available for play. You can visit briefly to try out some games or spend the whole afternoon at the event. The event is free of charge and open for everyone!
